What would it be like to be deaf?

This is in Response to the Questions and Reflections for July 27, 2009:
I would probably want to live on the planet eye-th instead of the planet ear-th.
If I was deaf, I think I would be fine. But I have a foot in the deaf world and a foot in the hearing world.
I'm a licensed sign language interpreter. I'm the medium between the deaf world and the hearing world. I see the hearing look at the deaf and see someone with a loss. I see the deaf look at the hearing and feel that feeling of loss. There's a barrier between the two worlds.
If you want to talk to someone about an idea, go to a deaf person. They see things we don't.
My deaf friend and his wife just had a beautifu baby. They expected to have a hearing child because deafness doesn't run in their families. Imagine their joy when the doctors told them in a sad voice that they had a deaf child. The doctors were so worried about them being upset by this 'loss'. They were thrilled! This baby could not have picked better parents!
